A hydronic outdoor furnace operates by directly connecting to an existing heating system. The unit itself has a central firebox and transfers heat to a water reservoir through the firebox walls or through flues running through the water jacket. The heated water is channeled into a home’s heating system to provide domestic hot water and space heat through radiant or forced air heating systems. An existing electrical heating system can even remain intact as a backup system.

Types of Wood Furnaces

There are two main types of wood furnaces to consider when looking to take a property off the grid or to relieve reliance on fossil fuels. They are:

Traditional:

A traditional wood furnace works on the same hydronic heat transfer system described above, but generally transfers heat from the fire to the water jacket through the walls of the firebox. Although this type of wood furnace transfers heat to the water more directly, the water reservoir also serves to cool the fire, preventing it from achieving temperatures necessary for high efficiency combustion and wood gasification. Traditional wood furnaces are typically installed outdoors 50-100 feet or more from the main building being heated.

High Efficiency:

A high efficiency wood furnace, also known as a wood gasifier, can increase efficiency over a traditional wood furnace by up to 70% and reduce emissions by 90%. High efficiency Empyre wood furnaces achieve this efficiency through a dual burn system in which all fuel is consumed and the gases released from the wood are burned. This process is called gasification. The secondary burn chamber is insulated from the water reservoir and can reach temperatures up to 2,000⁰ F. At these temperatures, nearly 100% of the ash, smoke and gases are destroyed, resulting in minimal fly ash and emissions.

Indoor:
