Whether you need heat for a home that is off the grid or are looking to reduce the use of fossil fuels with an alternative source of heating, a wood furnace can provide the perfect solution. This distinct option relies on the world’s oldest heating fuel to provide clean and reliable heat for homes, businesses and even industrial complexes.
At Pro-Fab Industries, we have been designing and manufacturing state-of-the-art, technologically advanced indoor and outdoor wood-burning models since the 1980s. Customers throughout North America and beyond rely on our products for their residential and commercial heating needs. Our indoor and outdoor wood furnace designs provide the reliability, performance and efficiency customers demand.
A hydronic outdoor wood furnace operates by directly connecting to an existing heating system. The unit itself has a central firebox and transfers heat to a water reservoir through the firebox walls or through flues running through the water jacket. The heated water is channeled into a home’s heating system to provide domestic hot water and space heat through radiant or forced air heating systems. An existing electrical heating system can even remain intact as a backup system.
There are two main types of wood furnaces to consider when looking to take a property off the grid or to relieve reliance on fossil fuels. They are:
A traditional model works on the same hydronic heat transfer system described above, but generally transfers heat from the fire to the water jacket through the walls of the firebox. Although this type of furnace transfers heat to the water more directly, the water reservoir also serves to cool the fire, preventing it from achieving temperatures necessary for high efficiency combustion and wood gasification. Traditional wood furnaces are typically installed outdoors 50-100 feet or more from the main building being heated.
A high-efficiency wood furnace, also known as awood gasifier , can increase efficiency over a traditional wood furnace by up to 70%, and reduce emissions by 90%. High efficiency Empyre wood furnaces achieve this efficiency through a dual burn system in which all fuel is consumed and the gases released from the wood are burned. This process is called wood gasification. The secondary burn chamber is insulated from the water reservoir and can reach temperatures up to 2,00000 F. At these temperatures, nearly 100% of the ash, smoke and gases are destroyed, resulting in minimal fly ash and emissions.
Empyre Pro Series and Empyre Elite high efficiency wood furnace designs are taking the lead in wood heating. Both outdoor and indoor wood gasifier models are available, both of which make wood heating cleaner, more affordable and more convenient for everyone.
Indoor wood boilers are equipped with all the high efficiency technology of outdoor wood gasifier models, but offers extra features for safety and convenience. The Empyre Elite indoor wood furnace has a sleek, compact design for installation in garages, basements or other tight spaces. The Empyre Elite is a hybrid model, offering an electric backup option for added convenience.
High efficiency outdoor wood boilers may look like traditional outdoor wood furnaces, but the gasification technology in our Empyre Pro Series outdoor wood gasification boilers can cut fuel requirements in half and reduce emissions by up to 90%. Switching out an old outdoor furnace for an EPA-approved wood-burning furnace will save money while saving the environment for the next generation to enjoy.
Why choose an Empyre Heating System?
Wood boilers and other similar products that replace fossil fuels with wood for heating deliver a number of advantages that make them stand out. When a property is heated with wood, the owner will:
Enjoy more reliability – An indoor or outdoor wood furnace by Empyre offers much greater reliability than standard grid service. Even when oil prices are up or the electricity grid is down, owners can heat their homes, outbuildings and offices cost-effectively and efficiently.
Enjoy independence – Empyre outdoor wood furnaces provide the advantage of helping a property go completely off the grid if desired. When combined with other alternative energy sources, a property can enjoy total independence.
Be more environmentally sound – An Empyre Elite indoor wood gasifier or Empyre Pro Series outdoor furnace relies on renewable wood sources for heating. This reduces the environmental impact, making this alternative a "green" option.
